Mem ~ מם
"Mashiach Mashiach Mashiach"
The Talmud states: “All the words of the prophets prophecy good things only for the days of Mashiach so that we will know who is the Messiah.”
Every Hebrew letter points to the Mashiach of Israel:
The Letter Mem is at the centre of the alphabet; the first, middle and last letter spells the Hebrew word emet אמת which is Truth: Mashiach is the Truth, the Way and the Life, He is the centre of all Truth.
- The letter carries the concept of Otiyot Sofiot (letters which have an open and closed form, also known as “the letters of Redemption - there are 5 in total)
- Although the Mem (and the letters of Otiyot Sofiot) will always make the same sound, their two forms however will look different
- When the Mem is at the end of a word, it is called the Mem Sofit which is closed only at the end of a word; there are a few exceptions as we will see from the notes that follow
The Character and Meaning behind Mem … why are there two different forms?
- If you reverse the 3 middle letters of the alphabet - כלמ - you then have מלכ which is Melech (King)
- These letters have to do with the Kingdom and the King of that Kingdom.
Understanding the Letter Mem
Represents = water (Mayim), New birth, Mashiach, Holy Spirit
Torah can also be likened to water - interesting to look at Psalm 119 and see the 22 stanza’s of the Psalm, using all of the 22 letters of the alphabet to begin each stanza. The letter Mem begins verse 97 … "Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long."
Gematria = 40 (the following are some significant examples of the number 40 in scripture)
- A child is in his mother’s womb for 40 weeks
- The flood was 40 days and 40 nights
- 40 days also represents the giving of the Torah (Moshe going up the mountain)
- The wandering of the children of Israel for 40 years before entering the promised land
- Yeshua's tempting by the enemy in the desert for 40 days
The Rabbis spoke a lot about this letter; they say the reason they speak so much about this it is because it has to do with the two comings of the Mashiach
- The open Mem represents the coming when all people recognise Him, the L-RD will be one
- The final Mem represents the coming all of Israel has expected, representing the coming that happens in secret, through mystery
The Meaning of Mem according to Isaiah
Isaiah 9:5-6 … “For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called Pele-Yoez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom; (6) *that the government may be increased, and of peace there be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it through justice and through righteousness from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the L-RD of hosts doth perform this.” L’Marbeh לםרבה Notice the closed Mem in the middle of the word - this is unusual!
Why the “out of place” closed Mem?
- Isaiah has done this because the letter is representing the closed or secret coming … the very first coming where not all recognised Him.
- It represents the womb of a young woman which would be opened in a supernatural way … the first coming was supernatural, His birth coming forth from a closed womb which would be opened supernaturally by G-D.
A reverse to Isaiah is found in Nehemiah 2:13
"And I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the dragon’s well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire." “Broken down” … Nehemiah is trying to fix and patch the walls of Jerusalem
פרוצמ Prutsim means “Broken down” - Why is the Mem at the end open when it should be closed?
This word and its letters are diminished in the Hebrew text, smaller than the rest of the usual text
- It is pointing to the 2nd coming of Mashiach who will fix the walls of Jerusalem … BUT He is not coming with the closed Mem, but the open one … for ALL WILL SEE HIM AND RECOGNISE HIM!
- Amos 9:11 ~ Breaking it down in reference to the closed Mem in the word Akeem אקים which meaning includes: “to arise, stand, to arise from, to come on the scene, to arise out of inaction, to stand, to endure, to set up, to lift up, to establish, to appoint, to be made to stand”
- “In that day” = Bayom Hahu which always means “in the day of Mashiach”
- “I will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen" = The Sukkot of David will be restored by Messiah, Son of David who is going to …
- Close up the breaches thereof, and = Rebuild Jerusalem, by appearing openly to the world and
- I will raise up his ruins = The temple will be rebuilt (the ruins are the temple) and
- I will build it as in the days of old = As it was in the past “K’eyemey Olam”
- “so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name,”
He will appear openly, and He will rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple,
making it more glorious than before
He will rebuild the walls!
This also represents the spiritual breaches that exist today
between the children of Israel and with G-D
Vs 12: “So that they may possess the remnant of Edom”
Edom is a picture of Christianity:
This passage is telling us that the Mashiach will give Israel the inheritance of all those who have persecuted the Jewish people for the last 2,000 years. BUT there will also be other nations who will bear G-D’s name. This is the beauty of the letter Mem, and how it represents His first and second coming.
"The Beauty of the letter Mem, and how it represents His first and second coming" … may we all be made ready for that great and awesome day : )
