THE SABBATH- Its Place in Our Lives

Picture
"And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.  So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. (Gen 2:2-3)

If God Himself rested on the seventh day and we are created in His image and likeness, then surely we need to do likewise? God declares this Sabbath day as holy, set apart from the other six days. So this day is all about being set apart to be a holy people. It is not surprising then that this seventh day has been and is such a major stumbling stone to people in the mainline Christian denominations who have taken on the lie that the Torah is done away with and has been replaced by Grace. The enemy, the Anti-Christ supports those who are anti-Torah as he is the Lawless One, the 'Torahless' One! We who are call  Christians, the followers of Messiah are meant to be 'called out', ecclesia from the world. Set apart to be holy and righteous under a Holy God who hates sin but loves the sinner.

Our Heavenly Father cannot love us any more than He already does. The closeness of our relationship with Him is how much we love Him and by how much we love others. Yeshua said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments". So a measure of how much we love Yeshua is how much do we desire to be obedient to His Word (Logos), the Living Torah as quoted in verse 24 "He who does not love Me does not keep My Words, and the Word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me."

The 10 Words otherwise known as the Ten Commandments contain the moral commandments that most Christians try to obey except for one, the fourth commandments! (I call this 'blink' theology) This commandment is the most detailed commandment in both Exodus 20:8-11 given below:
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God; on it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or the resident foreigner who is in your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.”
and Deuteronomy 5:12-15:
"Be careful to observe the Sabbath day just as the LORD your God has commanded you. You are to work and do all your tasks in six days, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. On that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male slave, your female slave, your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the foreigner who lives with you, so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have rest. Recall that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there by strength and power. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day."he Sabbath day."

The Exodus passage relates directly with our Genesis passage as it refers to creation as the foundational text. God rested and enjoyed all He had created especially mankind who He had made in His likeness.  However, the Deuteronomy passage refers to the redemption from slavery. It is a day to remember that we were once slaves to sin and are now free through the blood of Yeshua HaMashiach, our Paschal Lamb, to enter into His Rest/Shabbat. Both text clearly stated that foreigner/non-Jews 'ger' in Hebrew who are in covenant relationship with the God of Israel are to keep the Sabbath. Hence Sabbath is the time for joy to rise up in our spirit as we give thanks to our Creator for all He has created especially mankind and the joy of redemption from slavery into freedom from sin so we can regain what the first Adam lost. This is not to do about salvation but all about coming into deeper communion with the Living God, Yehovah, through Yeshua.

Yeshua and the Sabbath
There is only one covenant people Jew and Gentile who are obedient to Yehovah through Messiah. Jew and Gentile believers are called to become One New Man in Yeshua HaMashiach, Jesus the Christ who is the Lord of the Sabbath (Mtt12:8, Luke 6:5). So surely if He is our Lord we need to be under His covering as Lord of the Sabbath. Yeshua was fully Sabbath observant as the Torah requires but not as the Pharisees observed it. Paul was also fully Sabbath observant as a study of his epistles and Book of Acts points out in Acts 17:2; 18:4; 22:3 Phil 3:5. How far has Christianity fallen away from Yeshua and Paul His Apostle in Sabbath observance. By replacing the Sabbath by Sunday we have followed in Emperor Constantine's foot steps of Sun worship when on March 7, 321AD he decreed:
''The day sacred to the sun, to which the ancients very properly gave the name of Sunday'' and “Let all judges and townspeople and occupations of all trades rest on the vulnerable day of the Sun (Sunday)” (Refer: The Code of Justinian)

“Consequently a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God. For the one who enters God’s rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his own works. Thus we must make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by following the same pattern of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart. And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.” Hebrews 4:9-13

I pray that this article may get you to search out the complete word of God so it may judge the desires and thoughts of our hearts in this matter. So we may be prepared for the Millennium when Yeshua will rule with a iron scepter.
