Vav ~ ו
"The Mystery of the Vav"
Meaning = Hook
Gematria Value = 6
Sound = "v" [sometimes also 'oo' or 'o']
Pictorially = Tent Peg
The Vav is a very significant letter as it is the letter of Conjunction and Continuity. This is portrayed by its shape which looks like a nail, hook or peg that connects things together. In fact, when placed at the beginning of a word as prefix, it translates as 'and' that connects ideas, concepts etc. The absence of a vav ו at the beginning of a new chapter in the Torah indicates the beginning of a new era or subject while an inserted vav ו indicates a continuation.
The letter aleph א is formed by a diagonal vav ו with a upper and lower yod י the upper denoting the celestial and the lower one the mundane. The vav ו represents the ladder in Jacobs dream by which the angels ascend and descend in Genesis 28:12 linking heaven to the earth as in the Lord's Prayer.
When the word is a verb however, it changes the tense from past to future or vice versa! Thus it connects time together bringing man nearer to an understanding of timelessness of the Divine. As given in Psalm 90:4 For a thousand years in Your sight are like a day just passing by, or like a watch in the night. So the six days of Creation are like the 6000 years since Adam and Eve. Likewise at the Giving of the Torah at Sinai, the census of the Israelites was 600 000 that corresponds to the 600 000 letters in the Torah. Why 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust (burnt offering)?
This just gives a hint at the significant role the vav ו plays in the Hebrew language and especially the Torah. There is so much more that could be discovered when one studies this letter in the Scriptures. Also understanding the significance of numbers in Scripture is so important, but sadly so lacking in Christian teaching on the Bible.
